I was just lucky enough to get a hands-on demo of "The Act", a totally new type of video game created by a local game development company named Cecropia. There's a trailer of the game online, but it doesn't give you a sense of what it's actually like to play–which, right now, you unfortunately can't do anywhere, because they're still working out a business/distribution model. I'm in Boston for the holidays, and today I did one of the few things you can do in New England that you just can't do in California--I went candlepin bowling. While I waited for my friend Deb to arrive at the alley, I checked out its video games--and found that one of them was The Act, an "interactive romantic comedy" which I'd read about on Cartoon Brew earlier this year. The Act is touted as an “interactive film experience” but is, in essence, a traditionally-animated video game — the animation of which is created by a slew of ex-Disney employees. I got to play The Act in Ottawa at the animation festival, and it was a lot of fun. I was immediately reminded of Don Bluth’s forays into the video game world (Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace), but The Act differs in that it has a focus on subtlety and facial expressions built into the gameplay instead of fast-paced action. At lunch today I went to see the CEO of Cecropia, Omar Khudari, speak to the MIT Game Tycoons Club. Cecropia is working on a game called The Act, an beautifully-drawn interactive animated movie where the user controls the action via a rotating knob. In the first interactive scene (of eight), the protagonist (the handsome character to the left) tries to flirt with his love interest - turn the knob too far to one side and he grabs her and tries to give her a big kiss, turn the knob less and he casually glances her way.
